Liquid Culture and Solid Spawn: What Is the Difference?

Liquid culture and solid spawn are two different inoculation methods for shiitake block production. They differ in process, efficiency and suitable scenarios, and the choice affects colonization speed and fruiting stability.

1. Liquid culture

Liquid culture grows mycelium in a liquid medium and inoculates the block evenly. It colonizes quickly and suits automated, large-scale production.

2. Solid spawn

Solid spawn grows mycelium on grains or sawdust before inoculation. The process is more traditional and requires less equipment, but efficiency and colonization speed are usually lower.

3. Main differences

• Inoculation speed: liquid culture is more even and faster.

4. How to choose

For large-scale, continuous production with short cycles, prefer liquid culture. For small trials or limited facilities, solid spawn may be easier. Always base the final decision on local trials and batch results.
